News Letter: Dive Malasia...the
Perentian Islands
There are so many places in this world
that offer great diving and we only seem to hear about the
same ones over and over. Malaysia is an often overlooked destination,
and it has lots to offer in and out of the water. Most often
backpackers from Thailand will stumble into Malaysia and get
pleasantly surprised at what they find. The Perentian Islands
are located on the north east cost of peninsular Malaysia,
just south of the Thai boarder. An over-night trip from either
Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur will bring you to Kota Baru, the coastal
town where the ferry is caught to the Perentians. Kota Baru
also has an airport. The large Island offers luxurious hotels
and resorts, where as the small island is much more rustic,
with typically bungalow type accommodations. On a training
dive it is common to encounter turtles, stingray, and schools
of Bump head parrot fish. The sites are close to shore and
the coral is exceptionally healthy and large. Nice beaches,
fresh fish, volley ball, kayaking, diving and snorkeling,
and oh yeah bring a book, because this is a holiday! If you
were to consider exploring more of the country you will be
pleasantly surprised at how modern the country is. One of
the past leaders made a vow to continue developing the country
so as to meet the same standards of modernity that most of
Europe enjoys. Well almost 20 years later there is evidence
of this. The highways are excellent, Kuala Lumpur is an amazing
modern city with the tallest twin towers in the world. There
are also several national parks to travel in and camp. These
parks harbor some of the last wild tigers in the world.
